Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticised President Donald Trump for authorising recent military strikes on Iran, warning that the escalation risks dragging the United States into a broader, unintended conflict.
She described the military action as a “dangerous and unnecessary gamble” with the potential to endanger American troops and destabilise the Middle East.
In a statement released on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Harris said she opposed what she characterised as a regime-change operation in Iran. She argued that American service members were being placed in harm’s way for what she called “Trump’s war of choice.”

Harris cautioned that the strikes could result in U.S. casualties and weaken America’s diplomatic position globally. While voicing support for the troops, she questioned the president’s judgment in handling decisions of war and peace.
“Our troops deserve a Commander-in-Chief who approaches decisions on matters of war and peace with the same steadiness and discipline our troops show every day,” she said.
The former vice president also raised concerns about the constitutional limits on presidential authority, noting that any engagement in war requires Congressional authorisation. She urged lawmakers to use “all available power” to prevent further escalation and criticised Trump for breaking campaign pledges to end wars rather than start them, as well as previous assertions that Iran’s nuclear program had been “obliterated.”

Harris’s statements echo broader calls from Democratic lawmakers who are seeking to limit the president’s unilateral military powers through a War Powers Resolution. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have all demanded immediate congressional briefings and deliberation on the president’s actions.
Some Republican legislators, including Rep. Thomas Massie and Sen. Rand Paul, have also expressed concern over the potential overreach, creating unusual bipartisan pressure for oversight.
The debate revolves around whether Trump’s strikes violate the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which was designed to prevent presidents from engaging in military action without congressional approval. Political responses remain sharply divided: Republican leaders defend the strikes as necessary for U.S. security, while Democrats call them unlawful and demand immediate congressional action. International bodies, including the United Nations Security Council, have voiced alarm and called for diplomacy to avert wider conflict.
Harris’s comments come amid heightened tensions following joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, an operation that has drawn intense scrutiny both domestically and internationally.
As the situation unfolds, pressure is mounting on Congress to assert its constitutional role and determine the scope of U.S. involvement in the region.
