Senator Natasha Urges Probe into Attack on Obi, Oyegun

The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called on security agencies to investigate a reported attack on former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former ruling party chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

In a statement on Wednesday, she described the incident in Edo State as “deeply disturbing” and warned that rising political tensions could threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

“I strongly condemn the reported assassination attempt,” she said, urging authorities to take swift action.

Details of the alleged attack remain unclear, but the report has raised concerns about political intolerance ahead of future elections.

Ms Akpoti-Uduaghan said violence and intimidation must not be allowed in the country’s political space, warning against actions by what she described as overzealous supporters.

“Politics must never descend into violence or threats against perceived opponents,” she said.

She added that democracy depends on free expression and the protection of opposing views, stressing that political actors should be able to operate without fear.

The reported incident follows claims that  Obi, Odigie-Oyegun and other political figures were targeted by suspected thugs during an event in Benin City.
