Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the convoy of Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and current African Democratic Congress (ADC) frontrunner for the 2027 elections, on Tuesday in Edo State.

The attack occurred as Obi and his entourage approached the residence of former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. Officials confirmed that all members of the convoy, including Obi, escaped unharmed.

In a statement, the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) said the incident had sparked concern both within Nigeria and internationally.

Obi later displayed cartridges from the assault and expressed disappointment that the attack happened at the home of a respected elder statesman.
“This is a shocking and unacceptable act of violence at the residence of a man who has served Edo State with honour,” Obi said.

POMR also referenced threats made in July 2025 by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who had warned Obi against entering the state following a charitable visit to a local health facility. The governor later denied issuing the warning.
