FAAN MD Addresses MMIA Fire: Safety, Rescue, Containment Efforts

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, addressed the media on the ongoing firefighting and emergency operations at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Prime Business Africa reports.

In the briefing, Mrs. Kuku reassured passengers, stakeholders, and the general public that FAAN’s response to the fire was swift, coordinated, and in strict compliance with established safety protocols. She emphasized that the safety of airport users and staff remained the Authority’s top priority.

Highlighting the progress of the operation, Kuku confirmed that all emergency procedures were promptly activated, with firefighting and rescue teams working diligently to contain the blaze and minimise disruption to airport operations. She noted that the deployment of a crane facilitated the safe evacuation of 14 individuals initially trapped in the Control Tower, and that six casualties recorded were all in stable condition, with one individual transferred for further medical evaluation.

Addressing the source of the fire, Mrs. Kuku stated that preliminary investigations indicate the blaze originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal 1, and that the fire within the departure hall was largely under control. She assured the public that responders continued to closely monitor the situation to prevent any spread to adjoining sections of the terminal.

On airport operations, Kuku confirmed that FAAN and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) were actively working to restore a temporary Control Tower and reopen the airspace safely, reaffirming FAAN’s commitment to safeguarding lives and infrastructure while ensuring operational continuity.
