Actor Eric Dane, widely known for his roles as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed.

Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, including his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. Although Dane and Gayheart had separated previously, she remained by his side during his illness.

A prominent figure in television and film for more than two decades, Dane rose to fame for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, a role that earned him international recognition and a devoted fan base.

Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in 2025 and became an advocate for awareness of the disease, working with organizations to highlight the challenges faced by those living with the progressive neurodegenerative disorder. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control and, ultimately, death.

Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues alike, celebrating Dane’s career, his courage in facing ALS, and his impact both on and off screen.

“He was a remarkable talent and a devoted family man. His legacy will live on in the characters he brought to life and in the awareness he raised for ALS,” one statement from his representatives said.

Eric Dane’s death marks a significant loss to the entertainment world, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and advocacy that touched countless lives.
