King Charles III has said “the law must take its course” following the arrest of his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

In a statement issued Thursday by Buckingham Palace, the 77-year-old monarch expressed “the deepest concern” over the development and pledged full cooperation with authorities.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the King said. “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”

“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” he added. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”

The King also indicated he would not provide further commentary while investigations are ongoing. “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all,” the statement concluded.

Earlier on Thursday, Thames Valley Police confirmed it had opened an investigation into an allegation of misconduct in public office. Authorities said they are working with partners to examine the alleged offence and emphasised the need to protect the integrity of the probe.

“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time,” the police said in a statement.

The development comes amid renewed scrutiny over Andrew’s alleged association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing related to the matter.

Prior to the arrest, Buckingham Palace had signalled the monarch’s concern over the allegations. In a Feb. 9 statement, the Palace said the King had made clear “in words and through unprecedented actions” his concern about claims relating to his brother’s conduct and that the Royal Household stood ready to support police if approached.

The Palace added that “Their Majesties’ thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse.”

Andrew, who turned 66 on this day of his arrest, had previously stepped back from royal duties and relinquished the use of his royal titles amid mounting controversy.

Investigations remain ongoing.
