January 19, 2026

Senegal claimed their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title with a dramatic 1–0 win over hosts Morocco in the final on Sunday.

The match remained goalless after 90 minutes, with Senegal surviving a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved the spot-kick, sending the game into extra time.

Just three minutes into extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal, firing into the top corner after a swift counter-attack orchestrated by Sadio Mané.

The Teranga Lions held on despite Morocco’s attempts to equalise, including a header that struck the crossbar.

The victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON triumph, their first coming in 2021, and reinforces their status as one of Africa’s premier football nations.

The final was also marked by controversy, with Senegal briefly leaving the pitch in protest after the late penalty decision, highlighting the high tensions of the title decider.
