Former Minister of Defence and ex-Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, calling on the Federal Government to act urgently to preserve national cohesion.
In a statement released on Monday, Kwankwaso warned that the Federal Government appears overwhelmed in addressing escalating insecurity, a challenge that has manifested in growing incidents of banditry, kidnappings, armed robbery, and violent clashes across several regions of the country.
He criticized policies that allow state governments to deploy vigilante security outfits with limited professional training, noting that such measures, while well-intentioned, have inadvertently contributed to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. “This environment has enabled individuals, including some political actors, to form private militias, further threatening the fragile peace in our nation,” Kwankwaso said.

The former minister also raised alarms about rising ethnic and regional profiling, citing reports of citizens from certain regions being arbitrarily targeted, harassed, or detained in other parts of the country. He highlighted the growing harassment, intimidation, and hate speech on social media, often fueled by ethnic and religious divisions, as a serious threat to national unity.
Kwankwaso, who previously chaired the Committee on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, stressed that the current ease of arms circulation across the country is “deeply alarming and unacceptable.” He urged the Federal Government to take decisive action to reverse these dangerous trends before they spiral further out of control.
The former minister also congratulated General Christopher Gwabin Musa on his recent appointment as Minister of Defence, expressing confidence that, with the necessary political will and support, Musa possesses the competence and experience to restore security and stability to Nigeria.
Kwankwaso’s intervention comes at a time when insecurity has become a key national concern, prompting debates about the effectiveness of federal and state responses, the role of vigilante groups, and the urgent need to tackle both criminality and rising ethnic tensions.
