New Era for Nigeria’s Fertiliser Industry as Dangote, thyssenkrupp Uhde Roll Out Advanced Urea Facilities

November 11, 2025

Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Germany’s thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology (UFT) to deploy four new urea granulation units in Nigeria, a move expected to significantly expand the country’s fertilizer production capacity.

Under the agreement, UFT will license its advanced Fluid Bed Granulation Technology to DFL and provide a full Process Design Package as well as key proprietary equipment, including granulators and scrubbers.

Each of the new granulation units will produce 4,235 metric tons of urea per day, giving a combined daily capacity of 16,940 metric tons. Once completed, the facilities will raise Dangote Fertiliser’s annual output from about 2.65 million metric tons to more than 8 million metric tons.

The plants will be located in Lekki, Lagos State, adjacent to Dangote’s existing fertilizer complexes, which have operated with the same UFT technology since 2021 and currently produce 3,850 metric tons daily per unit.

According to the companies, the new units will feature an energy-efficient scrubbing system designed to reduce pressure drops and ensure compliance with strict environmental standards by effectively controlling dust and ammonia emissions.

They will also incorporate Ammonia Convert Technology (ACT), allowing the integration of ammonium sulfate byproducts into urea granules, a process that eliminates waste streams and improves commercial value.

Nadja Haakansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, said the collaboration aligns with both companies’ goals for sustainable industrial development.

“This partnership with Dangote Fertiliser Limited underscores our shared vision for sustainable industrial development and global food security,” she said. “By deploying our proven UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, we are setting new standards in efficiency and environmental stewardship.”

Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote, said the expansion reinforces Nigeria’s growing leadership in fertilizer production.

“We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology for the expansion of our fertilizer operations in Lekki,” he said. “This initiative reflects our commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency and industrial progress across Africa.”

UFT technology currently accounts for more than 70% of global urea granule production and is internationally recognised for maintaining emissions below regulatory thresholds.

Dangote Fertiliser Limited is one of Africa’s largest fertilizer producers and a key player in efforts to boost agricultural productivity and food security across the continent.
