Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has resigned from office, following weeks of mounting controversy over the authenticity of his academic credentials from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
President Tinubu has formally accepted Nnaji’s resignation, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, following some allegations against him,” the statement read. “President Tinubu thanked him for his service and wished him well in future endeavours.”

The minister’s exit follows a series of investigative reports revealing discrepancies in his academic and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) records. The University of Nigeria had earlier denied issuing him the degree certificate he presented during his Senate confirmation, sparking public outrage and prompting calls for his resignation.
In an affidavit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nnaji admitted that the university “never issued” him a degree certificate, although he claimed to have completed his studies in 1985. The case, which had been adjourned to November 10, 2025, was still pending at the time of his resignation.
Nnaji’s decision to step down has drawn reactions from civil society groups and political observers, who say it underscores the growing need for stricter verification of credentials among public officeholders.
The Presidency is yet to announce a replacement for the vacated ministerial position.
