A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced four internet fraudsters arrested in a sting operation near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Justice D.I. Dipeolu, on Friday, August 15, 2025, handed down the sentences after the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the suspects on separate charges of impersonation and cyber fraud.

The convicts – Bisiriyu Roqeeb Abiodun, Ibrahim Azeez Olatunji, Akinwale Isaac, and Habeeb Oladipupo Oshundairo were among the 93 persons arrested during the OOPL sting, one of the largest operations carried out by the EFCC in recent months.

According to the EFCC, the men posed as fictitious online characters to swindle foreign victims, using fake identities on Gmail, Zangi, and WhatsApp accounts. They pleaded guilty after prosecutors tendered forensic reports, mobile devices, and restitution drafts in court.

Delivering judgment, Justice Dipeolu sentenced Olatunji to one month in prison with an option of ₦500,000 fine, while Oshundairo, who made ₦600,000 from the scam, was ordered to perform 30 days of community service at Igbesa, Ogun State.

Isaac, who admitted earning $500, received three months’ imprisonment with an option of ₦1 million fine. His iPhone 16 Pro Max, Galaxy Note 9, ₦400,000 restitution, and a 2017 Toyota Camry were forfeited to the Federal Government.

Abiodun, who confessed to obtaining $200, was sentenced to one month imprisonment with an option of ₦500,000 fine. His Samsung Galaxy S20 and ₦200,000 restitution were also forfeited.

The EFCC said the convictions send a clear message that it is committed to prosecuting cybercrime to conclusion. With nearly 90 more suspects from the OOPL raid still under investigation, the agency stressed that the crackdown was part of wider efforts to curb internet fraud, which has dented Nigeria’s global reputation and drained unsuspecting victims of millions.

The case underscores both the scale of Nigeria’s cybercrime challenge and the government’s attempt to demonstrate that those caught will face punishment.
