Amanze ChinonyeThe Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police Force, demanding ₦3.5 billion in compensation and public apologies over what it described as a “Gestapo-style” midnight raid that left guests injured, property damaged, and business operations disrupted.
The incident occurred on the night of August 10, when EFCC operatives from Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, accompanied by police officers, entered the OOPL premises during a “Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza” party. According to the library’s Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, more than 50 armed men stormed the venue without presenting a warrant or notifying on-site police, firing gunshots that triggered panic among fun-seekers, including tourists and families.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelOrtese said about 93 youths were arrested, 18 vehicles seized, and numerous mobile phones confiscated or destroyed. He disclosed that security personnel attached to OOPL recovered 12 expended AK-47 pellets and a beret allegedly belonging to the operatives during the incident. He further noted that some of the fun-seekers were still receiving medical treatment in hospital, while others were preparing to testify in court.

The ₦3.5 billion demand comprises ₦1 billion for injured or distressed patrons and ₦2.5 billion for reputational and business losses, including damage to the image of the library and its founder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. OOPL is also seeking separate public apologies from EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, to be widely published.
“OOPL views this act as a violation of its rights, a disruption of its operations, and a threat to public safety,” Ortese stated, warning that legal action would follow if the demands were unmet by August 20.
The EFCC, in a brief statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters and the seizure of vehicles and mobile devices during a sting operation. The commission did not address allegations of violence, property damage, or the demand for compensation.
The library has launched its own investigation into the raid and is calling for an independent public inquiry into the conduct of the operation. Industry stakeholders warn the incident could have broader implications for tourism, civil liberties, and business confidence in Abeokuta.
