Kwam1 Rewarded, Comfort Humiliated – Nigerian Lawyers Speak On Double Standards In Aviation Sector

When the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, stood before cameras to announce Fuji icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam1 as Nigeria’s new “Ambassador of Aviation,” it should have been a straightforward PR moment for the sector. Instead, it has become a lightning rod for public outrage, not because the appointment came barely a month after the same musician bagged a flight ban for allegedly assaulting an airport security officer.

The optics are troubling. Just 9 days earlier, the minister had imposed a six-month travel ban on Kwam1, only to lift it quietly and reward him with an honorary role that carries the symbolic weight of national endorsement. No comprehensive explanation was offered to justify the reversal no fresh evidence, no official exoneration, no transparent process. In the absence of clarity, the narrative of preferential treatment writes itself.

The disquiet over Kwam1’s rapid redemption is amplified by another recent aviation scandal, the case of Ms. Comfort Emmanson. On August 10, Emmanson was forcibly removed from an Ibom Air flight after a disagreement with crew members. In the chaos, she was stripped in public, filmed in her most vulnerable state, and the footage was circulated online. In less than 24 hours, Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria imposed a lifetime ban on her. Unlike Kwam1, there was no ministerial intervention in her favor, no fanfare, no awards only humiliation and punitive measures handed down without a hearing.

The Nigerian Bar Association has not minced words, calling the treatment of Emmanson “reckless, unlawful, and a grave affront to the rule of law and human dignity.” Their statement underscores how she was denied the basic right to fair hearing, while condemning the criminal circulation of her nude images. The NBA’s demands withdrawal of the ban, a public apology, and an impartial investigation remain unmet.

Women’s rights advocate, Betty Akeredolu, has gone further, branding the incident “a disgrace… and a stain on our humanity.” She warns that what happened to Comfort could happen To anyone in a system where mob justice and corporate overreach go unchecked.

In an unexpected twist, while announcing Kwam1’s ambassadorial role, Minister Keyamo also ordered Comfort’s release from prison. But the move, devoid of context or official reasoning, has only deepened suspicions that the action was driven more by optics than justice. No acknowledgment of wrongdoing, no commitment to systemic reform just a headline-worthy gesture tacked onto a celebrity announcement.

The contrast is glaring. One high-profile figure moves from sanction to celebration in record time. Another, a regular Nigerian, is subjected to degrading treatment and a draconian ban, left to rely on public outrage and legal advocacy for a shot at justice. Both cases unfolded under the same minister, in the same sector, yet the outcomes reveal a hierarchy of worthiness defined not by the law but by status.

This is not simply about two individuals. It is about the culture of selective justice and opacity in Nigeria’s governance. The aviation sector, like many others, needs reforms rooted in transparency, accountability, and respect for human dignity. Without them, high-profile offenders will continue to receive red-carpet treatment, while ordinary citizens bear the brunt of arbitrary punishment.

Until that changes, Nigeria’s skies will remain a place where the powerful soar above the rules and the rest of us are left stranded on the tarmac.
