NEMA Warns Maiduguri Residents Of Flood As Alau Dam Releases Water

July 28, 2025

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun active surveillance of water levels across Maiduguri metropolis following an alert issued over the gradual release of water from the Alau Dam.

The alert, which was raised by the Chad Basin Development Authority, prompted immediate action from the Maiduguri Operations Office of NEMA, which dispatched a team on July 27 to monitor water levels at critical points, including Fori, Al Amin Daggash, Gwange, and the Moro‑Moro Bridge.

Preliminary assessments revealed that water levels at the monitored locations remain within safe thresholds, and there is currently no immediate threat to lives or property.

Despite this, NEMA says it remains on high alert and has assured residents that 24-hour monitoring and early warning systems are in place to respond to any developments.

The agency’s caution is informed by last year’s flooding incident, which affected Maiduguri and neighbouring communities after a sudden spike in water discharge from the Alau Dam caused widespread damage.

In anticipation of similar risks, NEMA is urging residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to stay vigilant, adhere strictly to official advisories, and promptly report any unusual changes in water levels.

The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to disaster preparedness and proactive risk mitigation. She emphasized the need for robust community engagement and stakeholder collaboration to prevent a repeat of past flooding disasters.

“NEMA is fully prepared to respond swiftly to any emergency,” Mrs. Umar said. “But we also count on the cooperation of communities and relevant authorities to ensure timely information-sharing and coordinated action.”

Residents are encouraged to remain calm but attentive, as authorities continue efforts to ensure that the gradual dam release does not translate into another environmental emergency.
