Enugu Air Begins Operations Monday

Enugu Air, a commercial airline, owned by the  Enugu State government is set to officially launch its operations on Monday, 7 July 2025.

According to a statement released by the airline, the launch ceremony will take place at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, expected to attend alongside other dignitaries.

Three Embraer aircraft, selected for their performance, passenger comfort, and suitability for regional flights, from the E170 and E190 series, will be deployed by Enugu Air as it begins operations.

The airline will operate Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos routes at the initial stage and later expand to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other important cities in Nigeria and beyond.

Analysts believe that the launch of Enugu Air has the potential to significantly impact Nigeria’s aviation sector, regional connectivity, and the local economy. It is expected to strengthen healthy competition in the domestic route operations (in terms of ticket prices), and enhance regional connectivity.

Enugu State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, stated that Enugu Air is a critical component of Governor Peter Mbah‘s vision for a modern, integrated transportation system that will position the state as a major aviation hub in Nigeria.

Highlighting the potential impact, Ozor said Enugu Air, which was built on a strong foundation of innovation and sustainability, would revolutionise regional air travel,  and raise Enugu’s profile nationally and globally.

Industry watchers say that if run successfully, Enugu Air could serve as a model of state-backed aviation initiatives in Nigeria, similar to Ibom Air, owned by  Akwa Ibom State.
