Tuchel Snubs Nwaneri, Names Myles Lewis-Skelly For England Games

May 23, 2025

Nigeria-eligible forward Ethan Nwaneri was once again overlooked for a place in the England men’s senior national team for their games in June against Andorra and Senegal.

The Three Lions will face Andorra in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on June 7 before a June 10 friendly against Senegal.

Tuchel took over the reins of the English national team officially on January 1, 2025 and has his first round of games in charge of the team in March but did not consider Nwaneri despite his promising performances in the winter for Arsenal in the Premier League.

Nwaneri’s clubmate and fellow Hale End Academy product Myles Lewis-Skelly made the cut then.

While Nwaneri again failed to gain the trust of Tuchel, midfielder turn left back, Lewis-Skelly was considered for the June assignments.

Meanwhile Tuchel has revealed that players whose clubs will be involved in the FIFA Club World Cup will not be released on time from the England camp.

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach Tuchel spoke to the media in his press conference.

Both Chelsea and Bayern will take part in the revamped FIFA tournament slated to hold between June 15 and July 13.

“Why send players if we want to cherish every day we have together. What signal would it send to the group to send players away?”

Tuchel, who oversaw victories against Albania and Latvia in his first two matches in March, said England will start and finish the camp with the same 26 players, adding that he will “manage their minutes”.

“I was an advocate and I could see the reason for the players who go to the Club World Cup to maybe leave a little earlier, to maybe change the squad,” Tuchel said.

“I can understand the argument from especially the clubs who would love to see the players get a rest but we have a strong argument for ourselves and our goals we want to reach.

“We are building a group and a togetherness. We want to develop a camaraderie and it is only possible if we take every day seriously.”

English clubs – Chelsea, Man City will seek to win the tournament with several England internationals in the team.

Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are also taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup with English presence in their squads.
