Davido, Bright Chimezie Lagos Link-up Thrills Fans, Raises Expectations

The recent link-up between Afrobeats Superstar, Davide Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and legendary Nigerian highlife musician, Bright Chimezie, in Lagos has thrown fans into frenzy.

Already some are predicting a collaboration that will give birth to a hit song.

In videos shared on Instagram on Monday, Davido was seen warmly greeting and engaging in lively conversation with the iconic performer, known for his signature “Zigima” style.

The face-to-face moment is a follow-up to  a recent video call between the two, where Davido paid tribute to Chimezie and credited his 2018 song “Because of English” as the inspiration behind Davido’s latest track “With You,” featuring Omah Lay.

“I got inspiration from your song, God bless you” Davido said during the call, which was posted by nightlife mogul, Cubana Chief Priest.

During the conversation, Davido previewed the “With You” music video for Chimezie and extended a warm invitation to Lagos, saying, “It would be nice to meet you face-to-face.”

Bright Chimezie responded warmly, praising the song as a “beautiful piece of work” and expressing his appreciation for Davido’s homage.

A unique aspect of the meeting was Davido putting a video call to his Atlanta based wife, Chioma, who exchange pleasantries with the Zigima king. The song ‘English’ by Bright Chimezie which Davido described as highly inspirational was released in 2018.

The 64-year-old musical icon in the song narrated how he was flogged by his teacher because he couldn’t speak English. Although put together as a song, some say the mentality of promoting English language while ignoring local languages, contributed to cultural confusion among younger ones.

Bight Chimezie, whose Zigima highlife is delivered in both Igbo and English has a unique dancing style that has endeared him to many over the years.

Bright Chimezie, also known as Okoro Junior, is a multiple award winner, having picked awards for his efforts from institutions such as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Tribune Chapter, in recognition of his musical achievements. Notably, he was bestowed with the title “Duke of African Music” by the royal father, the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyede Oyeyonsin II, from Oyo State.

In addition to his musical endeavours, Bright Chimezie has made appearances in several Nigerian movies, including “Deadly Proposal,” “Abuja Boys,” and others.

His lyrics contain lot story lines with lots of lessons to learn. Bright Chimezie who incidentally shares same birthday with Nigeria, October 1st, 1960, boasts of several hit songs including Ube Nwanne (Cry of a Brother), Oyibo mentality, Remember your roots, and Respect Africa among others.
