The interim coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austin Eguavoen on Sunday night announced that he has stepped down from his position in the aftermath of the 1-0 defeat to Tunisia in the round of 16 stage.

The Nigeria Football Federation appointed the former Eagles right back to be in charge of the team to the Nations Cup after Gernot Rohr was sacked in December 2021 and appointed Jose Peseiro with the recommendations of AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.
Eguavoen made the disclosure shortly after the game in the post match press conference, confirming that he will be returning to his role as Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as agreed before he took over the job as interim coach.
“What happens next is that I am the interim coach and Technical Director of the NFF, I will go back to my position and allow the Federation make a decision on the way forward,” Eguavoen who led the team to a third place finish at the AFCON in 2006 told the media.
The 1994 winner of the tournament as player for Nigeria will be the undisputed preferred coach of the national team for most Nigerian football faithful.
