According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State command, Grace Iringe-Koko, the affected facility is operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

The command said the incident happened on Monday night, assuring that the situation had been brought under control.

“The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a fire incident occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) operated Trans Niger Delta Pipeline, located at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities,” the Police PRO stated.

“During a routine night patrol, security operatives observed the incident and promptly alerted SPDC management.

“The latter initiated necessary safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline. As a result of swift intervention, the situation is now under control, and there is no further threat to residents or the environment.”

Iringe-Koko said police have commenced an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the fire explosion.

The incident has created tension in the state, especially as the political crisis rages.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but police investigation focuses on whether it was an accident or an act of sabotage, especially given the threats made by militant groups.

The threats were made after the Federal Government decided to withhold Rivers State’s allocation due to the ongoing political instability in the state.
