PDP: The Plot Thickens

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has won the chairmanship and councillorship elections in all the 30 local government areas in Osun State.

This was announced by the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, on Saturday, 22 February 2025.

Abioye stated that the PDP also won all the 332 councillorship seats in the election.

The OSSIEC chairman, who congratulated the candidates on their victory at the poll, said Certified True Copies of the result of the elections would be made available to whoever is interested in having them.

OSSIEC conducted the election on Saturday despite initial hiccups. Attorney General of Federation (AGF), and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the police had asked the electoral body to put the exercise on hold.

Police claimed that it received a credible intelligence indicating a likelihood of violence during the exercise.

The AGF said the Court of Appeal, Akure division, had on 10 February 2025, set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court, Osogbo, delivered on 25 November 2022, which removed former local council chairmen belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Fagbemi said the appellate court judgment means that the APC chairmen have been restored.

However, OSSIEC relied on a judgement of the Osun State High Court in Ilesa which ordered it to conduct elections for the vacant positions of chairmen and councillors in the 30 LGAs.

The exercise, which began at 8 am on Saturday in all the 30 local councils in the state, was said to have recorded low turnout of voters.

The state governor, Ademola Adeleke, voted at his Polling Unit 9, Sagba Abogunde Ward 2, in Ede North Local Government Area of the state on Saturday morning.

Speaking after voting, the governor said the exercise was peaceful. He commended the electoral body for its orderly conduct of the exercise.
