NAFDAC Uncovers Expired Condom Brand Repackaged For Sale At Lagos Market

As the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), continues its enforcement exercise at the Idumota market in Lagos, its officials have uncovered packs of a brand of latex condom that have expired, which dealers repackaged for resale.

In a video shared on the NAFDAC X handle, an official of the agency was seen displaying packs of Kiss brand of condoms, which it said have expired but were repackaged, revalidated and displayed for sale by traders.
According to the officials, the products were donated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and had expired since 2022 but were revalidated and put into Kiss packaging materials for resale and extended the date to 2027.

“So, what you find in Kiss are actually not Kiss condoms, they are counterfeit versions of the expired donated condoms,” the NAFDAC officials stated in the video.

It showed pictures of other seized drugs which include: Analgin injection, Rabies vaccine for humans, and Oxytocin injection among others.

The agency officials said they also seized other unregistered medical products imported into the country and expired drugs that were being rebranded for resale.

The agency announced on Monday, 17 February 2025 that its officials uncovered large consignments of Cocodamol and falsified GSK Ampiclox at the Idumota market during an enforcement exercise.

The agency further said it also found Benxhexol-5 tablets, packaged in cellophane sachets likely for further processing into finished products and possibly labeled with falsified NAFDAC Registration Numbers.

“The ongoing enforcement aims to eliminate illicit drugs and curb the circulation of unregistered, expired, revalidated, and controlled medicines,” NAFDAC stated.

“So far, over 3,000 shops have been screened and placed on hold,” it added.
