While reporting the arrival of former two-time heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, to Nigeria and subsequently to his ancestral home, Shagamu, Primebusiness.africa settled for the headline “How Homeboy Anthony Joshua Stormed Shagamu.”

Aptly so, Anthony Joshua is indeed a homeboy. Since arriving Ogun State, he has shown in many ways that he has not forgotten anything about  the culture of his kinsmen and indeed the respect accorded elders and by extension those in authority, despite growing up in the United Kingdom.

He is not one to carry shoulder with an air of “Me and you no dey the same category.”

Anthony Joshua who has visited both Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu respectively has been given the assignment of being the torch bearer to the 22nd National Sports Festival billed for May this year.

Ogun State Governor had during his visit urged Joshua who has won 25 career fights, 15 of them by knockout to come back for the Festival and haven given his word and is likely to keep the promise.

The 35-year-old boxer was equally seen in video training within premises, then fetching water with a bowl to pour on his head and body while wearing his boxers, a typical sight of the usual growing up in the neighbourhood.

He appears to have planned his schedule properly with a list of places and persons to visit. His visit to Afro beat sensational and landlord of African Shrine, Femi Kuti, was another icing on the cake and he left no one in doubt that he was enjoying it all as he joined in Femi Kuti’s signature tune signoff “Arararara.’

He had earlier paid courtesy call on Lagos State Governor,  Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu. It is safe to say that Joshua who was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 had an eventful visit to Nigeria this Yuletide.
