Ex-US President, Carter, Passes On At 100

Former United States President, Jimmy Carter, has died at the age of 100.

This was confirmed in a statement released by the Carter Centre on Sunday.

The Centre said he died in Plains, Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

Carter, who was the 39th US president, served one term in office from 1977 to 1981.

Carter became the longest-living president and the first to make it 100 years old in US history.

Prior to becoming president, Carter, who was a member of the Democratic Party, served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. 

He was preceded by Gerald Ford and succeeded by Ronald Reagan as president.

He established the Carter Centre after leaving office as president to advocate human rights.  He won Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his peace advocacy. 

Before before joining politics, Carter had served in the US Navy ‘s submarine  service.

For his education, Carter attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946.Carter’s death came a year after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who died on 19 November 2023, at age 96.
