Prof. Kingsley Moghalu Receives Good Governance Award

One of the key highlights of the night was the presentation of the Good Governance Award to Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, President of the African School of Governance. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Moghalu emphasised the significance of governance in society.

“Governance is a very fundamental principle of human existence. The difference between a civilised society and an uncivilised one is that the civilised society has governance,” he said.

Prof. Moghalu, who also chaired the occasion, underscored the role of governance in both private and personal spheres. “In my family, I am the CEO, the Chief Risk Officer, and the Chief Strategy Officer, but my wife is the Chief Financial Officer,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience. His remarks highlighted the importance of governance beyond corporate boardrooms.

Seplat Energy and Other Honourees Recognised

Seplat Energy PLC was presented with the Corporate Governance Award in recognition of its commitment to ethical business practices and robust governance structures. Other prominent awardees included Dr. Cosmas Maduabuchukwu Maduka, CON, FCIoD, who received the CIoD Entrepreneurial Award, and His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, who was honoured with the ANOFI GUOBADIA Award for Leadership and Excellence.

Alhaji Tijani M. Borodo, President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the CIoD, commended the recipients for their advocacy of good governance and leadership.

“Your unrelenting advocacy of good governance within and outside the country has been an inspiration to us as we partner with other stakeholders to drive the same cause in the public and private sectors,” Borodo said, addressing the awardees and guests.

Outgoing Committee Chairmen and Past Presidents Honoured

The event also recognised the contributions of 17 outgoing Executive Committee Chairmen and several past presidents of the CIoD. Their roles in fostering the institute’s growth and advancing governance transformation were lauded by attendees.

Alhaji Borodo highlighted the significance of the 2024 edition, noting that it was distinct due to the inclusion of appreciation awards for past leaders of the institute.

“This year’s edition of the Annual Directors’ Dinner is particularly unique. In addition to the annual awards for excellence, we have appreciation awards for many leaders in the Chartered Institute of Directors who have served the institute materially over the past years,” Borodo said.

He further reflected on recent changes in the CIoD’s governance structure following its charter status, which was granted on May 26, 2023. “The reconstitution of the governing council and dissolution of the executive committee in compliance with new charter statutes signify a pivotal moment in our history,” Borodo stated.

Reflections on Governance and the Future of CIoD

The concept of governance as a driver of societal development was a recurring theme throughout the event. Prof. Moghalu’s reflections on governance resonated with attendees, as he linked the concept to the growth of organisations, families, and communities.

“The CIoD is one of Nigeria’s most respected professional associations. Leadership transitions have occurred without rancor or scandals. You just do the business professionally,” Moghalu said.

He stressed that the CIoD’s stability and professionalism serve as a model for governance in Nigeria’s private and public sectors.

Looking Ahead

As the event drew to a close, Borodo urged directors and leaders to maintain their commitment to governance and excellence.

“We have a responsibility to lead with integrity, vision, and courage. We must make a positive impact on our organisations, our communities, and our country,” he said.

Prince Adedapo Adelagan, FCIoD, Chairman of the Industry, Trade & Investment Committee, and one of the awardees from the outgoing Executive Committee Chairmen, shared his gratitude and emphasised the CIoD’s positive impact on Nigeria’s economy.

“I am so grateful for this award. This is a testament to the good work we are doing. The CIoD is playing an important part in impacting the economy of the nation. Like the chairman of the occasion has said, with the need for good governance, I believe things will be better for our economy,” Adelagan said in an interview with Prime Business Africa.

The celebration ended with a renewed call for continuous improvement in governance and leadership across Nigeria’s private and public sectors. The honourees’ achievements were lauded as a testament to the impact of good governance in fostering growth, stability, and progress.
