Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday, 23 December, finished the year 2021 as the fifth best ranked team on the African continent ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Eagles were able to maintain their top five place after they finished their 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage qualifiers as leaders despite the unconvincing 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in November.

The ranking meant that the three-time African champions will be seeded and drawn against any of the other teams outside the top five in the continent for the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs.

The five winners of the two-legged game will qualify for the 2022 World Cup taking playing in Qatar.

Senegal who still maintains their number 1 position in Africa remained unmoved in the December ranking as 20th in the world ahead of Morocco in number 2 and 28th in the world, moving up one place from the 29th position.
