A university don, Professor Sunny Udeze, has criticised African leaders for their bad governance that has kept the continent stagnated.

Speaking during his inaugural lecture on Thursday, 12th September at the Enugu State University of science and Technology (ESUT) Agbani, Enugu State, Professor Udeze said the rich can no longer sleep because the poor are awake and the poor are awake because they are hungry.

This statement which he attributed to Sam Aluko was made in reference to the rising hunger in Nigeria caused by fuel subsidy removal, corruption and failure of the government to address issues raised by the citizens during the recent #EndBadGovernance protest held across the country.

The Professor of Public Relations who delivered ESUT’s 39th Inaugural lecture on the topic, “Deconstructing Stereotypes and Reconstructing the Image of Africa in the Global Media: Public Relations Nexus” believes that apart from misconceptions about Africa based on complete ignorance or mischief, others are unpalatable truths that African leaders who benefit from the rot or decay do not want to admit.

He added that negative perception of Africa is caused by the ostentatious lifestyle of African leaders who fleece their countries to the marrow and hide the proceeds in Europe and America.

While Udeze proposed public relations as effective tool in changing stereotypes and negative western media depiction, he emphasised that this can only be achieved by first engendering good governance in Africa.

“Until positively unique things start happening in Africa and such things are now brought to the attention of the world using PR techniques, we will continue to grope in the dark while other countries advance,” he said.
