Maiduguri Flood: Nigerian Govt Evacuates Correctional Centre As Over 280 Inmates Escape

The Nigerian government has taken steps to evacuate inmates in the Maiduguri medium security custodial centre, following severe flooding in the capital city on Tuesday.

This is as not less than 280 inmates have reportedly escaped as flood ravaged the north east state’s capital city.

The flood was said to have collapsed a part of the perimeter fence of the Maiduguri prison, enabling some inmates to escape.

Reports say the authorities of the correctional service centre have launched a manhunt for the inmates. There are indications that some of the escapees are Boko Haram members and hardened criminals who might pose a threat to public safety.

In a statement, the Spokesman for the Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar, assured the public that the service is working with other security agencies to take the necessary measures to ensure public safety.

The flood which started over the weekend, worsened in the following days, submerging homes, farm lands and crippling businesses and peoples means of livelihoods.

It was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam following heavy rains.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said there are ongoing efforts by the state government to relocate displaced residents. According to reports, about three internally displaced persons camps (including the Bakasi camp) have been opened to accommodate affected persons.

Vice president, Kashim Shettima, said the flood is the worst in over three decades.
