Russia-Ukraine War: United States Pledges $2.3bn Security Aid For Ukraine

US Pledges New Security Assistance

The United States has announced a new $2.3 billion security assistance package for Ukraine, aimed at providing crucial air defense and anti-tank weapons.

This announcement was made by US Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, during a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, on Tuesday.

“The United States will soon announce more than $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine,” Austin said. “This package will provide more air defense interceptors, anti-tank weapons, and other critical munitions drawn from US stocks.”

Supporting Ukraine’s Defense Efforts

Austin emphasized the importance of this assistance in helping Ukraine defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression. “It will also enable the United States to procure more Patriot and NASAMS air defense interceptors which will be provided on an accelerated timeline,” he added.

Umerov expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “With that support, we will stop Russia and stop the aggression.”

Significant US Support

The United States has been a major military supporter of Ukraine, committing over $51 billion in weapons, ammunition, and other security assistance since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Despite earlier delays in new aid packages this year, recent months have seen a resurgence in US support following legislative approval of $95 billion in aid, which includes $61 billion specifically for Ukraine.

Path to NATO Membership

In anticipation of NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit in Washington next week, Austin highlighted the steps being taken to support Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

“We’ll take steps to build a bridge to NATO membership for Ukraine,” Austin said.

He also mentioned a recent 10-year bilateral security agreement signed between the United States and Ukraine, aimed at meeting Ukraine’s immediate security needs and building a future force to deter further Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s Aspiration for NATO

Umerov reiterated Ukraine’s eagerness to join NATO, saying, “Hopefully soon Ukraine will receive its invitation.”

While NATO has recently expanded to include Finland and Sweden, Ukraine’s membership remains contentious due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. Washington has maintained that Ukraine’s NATO membership cannot be considered until the war concludes.

The new security package underscores the United States’ commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict, while also signaling continued support for Ukraine’s aspirations for closer ties with NATO.
