Charly Boy Calls National Anthem Change ‘Misplaced Priority’

Nigerian singer Charly Boy has expressed his disapproval over the recent decision to revert to Nigeria’s old national anthem. He argued that changing the anthem is not a pressing issue for Nigerians.

Taking to Instagram he said: “Misplaced priorities, incompetence, greed, and the almighty CORRUPTION can never be covered up by false propaganda. My people, what bothers us more in this country: HUNGER or NATIONAL ANTHEM?”

His post has sparked mixed reactions and conversations from his followers. One user commented, “They don’t have bills in the house to sponsor. They can’t even recite the one we have today; they want to learn the old one written by another man.” Another remarked, “The disconnect between the political rulers and the citizens is alarming.” One follower poignantly asked, “WHICH WAY NIGERIA?”

The controversy follows the Senate and the House of Representatives’ approval of a bill to change the national anthem from “Arise, O Compatriots” back to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” President Tinubu signed the bill into law on May 29, 2024.

In related news, Afrobeats artist Joeboy also called out the Government over why changing the National Anthem was prioritised over pressing national issues.
