In a move anticipated to quell brewing unrest in Nigeria’s higher education sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of over 555 individuals to oversee the governance of federal universities, polytechnics, and Colleges of Education across the nation amidst the lingering ASUU strike.

Join our WhatsApp Channel“The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00 am daily,” affirmed Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.
The appointments arrive against a backdrop of mounting tension fueled by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which decried the Federal Government’s procrastination in constituting Governing Councils. ASUU’s dissatisfaction, expressed during a briefing at the University of Abuja, underscores broader grievances over delayed salary adjustments and governmental indifference toward academic concerns.
“Our patience wears thin as governance falters,” remarked Dr. Adamu Ibrahim, a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos. “Without effective leadership, our universities languish in neglect, hindering progress and morale.”

The ASUU, a formidable voice for academic welfare, has adamantly criticized what it perceives as the administration’s lackadaisical approach toward educational reforms. Professor Funke Adebayo, spokesperson for the union, articulated, “The recurrent delays in appointing Governing Councils jeopardize our educational stability. How can we maintain standards when governance remains adrift?”
President Tinubu’s approval of these appointments seeks to assuage fears of institutional paralysis amid looming threats of the ASUU strike. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, affirmed the government’s commitment to rectifying systemic deficiencies. “The Ministry of Education holds the mandate to nominate,” he clarified, “and the President duly endorses these selections to uphold institutional integrity.”
However, ASUU’s discontent persists, echoing sentiments of disenchantment among the academic community. “We demand tangible actions, not mere gestures,” asserted Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University. “Our universities demand leadership that champions educational excellence and respects the sanctity of academia.”
As the nation navigates these tumultuous waters, stakeholders brace for potential disruptions to the academic calendar should ASUU proceed with its threatened strike. The specter of halted classes and stalled research looms large, exacerbating concerns over Nigeria’s educational future.
In response to these developments, stakeholders emphasize the urgency of constructive dialogue and swift action to avert future ASUU strikes. “Educational reforms cannot languish in bureaucratic quagmire,” emphasized Senator Oluwasegun Adebayo, Chair of the Senate Committee on Education. “The appointment of Governing Councils must herald a new era of collaboration and progress.”
With the impending inauguration of Governing Councils, scheduled to convene later this month, all eyes remain fixed on Abuja’s corridors of power.
