10-year-old Emmanuel Shaibu Needs $39,000 For Liver Transplant

While many are grappling with only hunger posed by current economic hardship, others are battling with life-threatening ailments.

A 10-year-old boy, Emmanuel Shaibu, currently admitted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), is battling with Liver Failure and needs transplant to be done abroad as it is “not readily available in Nigeria,” according to Dr Adeniyi F.O., a medical expert managing the patient.

According to a medical report dated 25 April 2024, and signed by Dr Adeniyi, who is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist, the young Emmanuel Shaibu with hospital number: LID-23-006265, was admitted at LUTH on 6 April 2024 with nine months history of “recurrent abdominal swelling, yellowness of the eye, fever and irrational talk.”

The report indicated that further assessment revealed “massive ascites (abnormal build-up of fluid in the abdomen), anaemia, deranged liver enzymes, clotting abnormalities and disorientation.”

“He has had multiple transfusions with blood and blood products and currently requires more, in addition to intravenous and oral medications. Definitely, he will require liver transplantation which is not readily available in Nigeria,” Dr Adeniyi stated.

The family of Emmanuel Shaibu is therefore appealing for financial help to facilitate his treatment and save his life.

The estimated cost of the medical procedure which will be done in India is $39,000 (which is about 54.6 million naira going by current exchange rate.
