CAF Confed Cup: Rivers United Gets Tough Draw, To Face USM Algiers

Nigeria’s CAF Confederation Cup representatives, Rivers United, have been drawn against title-holders USM Algiers in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup following Tuesday’s draws in Cairo, Egypt, Prime Business Africa reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the draws of both the Energies CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup with some testy ties in the horizon.

Rivers are Nigeria’s sole team in the CAF interclub competitions and are hoping to lift the title in the second-tier competition after the trident of Enyimba, Bendel Insurance and Remo Stars bowed out of the two top club competitions in the preliminary stages.

Rivers United’s qualification to the quarterfinals of the competition however came with good tidings for Nigeria as of guarantees that the country will retain its four slots (two apiece) in the Champions League and Confederation Cup for next season.

Due to the CAF co-effiecent club rankings, Nigeria were at the risk of losing two spots in both competitions unless the last team standing earns a berth in the quarterfinals which Rivers have achieved.
