Ini Edo, Chineye Nworah Fight Over 'Shanty Town' Ownership Rights

The future of the beloved Netflix series “Shanty Town” hangs in the balance as actress Ini Edo and filmmaker Chineye Nworah find themselves in a legal battle over the rights to the acclaimed production.

What was initially set to be a smooth transition into discussions for a second instalment of the hit series has now hit a major roadblock due to the ongoing feud between the two key figures involved in its creation.

Reports emerged that Netflix Africa had initiated talks with Nworah and Giant Creative Media regarding a potential follow-up season. However, on January 15, 2024, Ini Edo threw a legal curveball, issuing a warning to Netflix to cease all negotiations with Nworah and her production company.

Ini Edo’s Cease and Desist Letter

Edo’s lawsuit, filed with specific assertions, challenges Nworah’s purported sole ownership of “Shanty Town.” Key points raised in Edo’s argument include:

Disputing Nworah’s exclusive rights to negotiate future seasons, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the project involving herself, Nworah, and Joy Odiete, as outlined in an agreement dating back to December 13, 2019.

Highlighting a subsequent deal struck in June 2021, which involved multiple entities, including Minini Empire Productions and Giant Creative Media, affirming shared intellectual property rights and profit entitlements.

In response, Nworah has vehemently contested Edo’s claims through a press release issued on February 22, 2024, asserting sole ownership of the copyright and branding Edo’s assertions as baseless.

The statement issued by Giant Creative Media urged the public to disregard Edo’s assertions, reiterating Nworah’s status as the solitary originator and copyright holder of “Shanty Town.”
