President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for Sunday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final between hosts Cote d’Ivoire and three-time African champions Nigeria.

Prime Business Africa understands that this was disclosed by Vice President Kasim Shettima who spoke to Confederation of African Football President Dr. Patrice Motsepe about plans by Nigeria’s leader to cheer the Super Eagles to victory against the host team.

Motsepe, who has attended almost all the games of the tournament barring some of the third group stage matches that were played simultaneously, on Friday evening faced the media in a press conference where he spoke on a number of pertinent issues on African football.

By attending the final, Tinubu will become the second Nigerian president to grace the final of the Afcon involving Nigeria.

President Shehu Shagari was present at the Lagos National stadium on 25 March 1980 when the Green Eagles of Nigeria defeated Algeria 3-0 to win the country’s first African title.

Nigeria’s Military head-of-state Sani Abacha was not present in Tunisia when the Super Eagles won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations while onetime Senate President, David Mark was at the head of Nigeria’s delegation when the Super Eagles won in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2013.
