Ondo Governor Akeredolu Dies At 67

The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, is dead.

According to reports, Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria died in the early hours of Wednesday in Lagos.

He died at the age of 67.

Akeredolu had a prolonged battle with leukemia (blood cancer). The governor in the course of his ailment, spent three months in Germany on medical leave and returned in September. After his return to Nigeria, Akeredolu stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and tried to manage affairs of his state from there, which generated public reactions.

President Tinubu later intervened and urged him to hand over to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as he went for another medical leave.

Aiyedatiwa has since then been governing the state in an acting capacity.

Born on July 21, 1956, Akeredolu attended Aquinas College Akure and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

He was Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997-1999.

He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1998. Akeredolu was president of the Nigeria Bar Association from 2008 to 2010.

He was elected Governor of Ondo State on the Platform of the All Progressives Congress in November 2016 and reelected in 2020.
