Dangote Refinery Receives Additional 1Million-Barrel Crude Shipment

Dangote Refinery has marked a significant step forward in its path to commencing the production of refined petroleum products as it has received an additional one million barrels of bonny light crude from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL)

This signals a pivotal phase for the world’s largest single-train refinery. “This milestone marks our commitment to delivering large-scale projects and underscores our capability to contribute to the country’s energy landscape,” expressed Mr. Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, during the reception of the first consignment.

The arrival of the second consignment, transported via the MT Otis owned by Trafigura, signifies the refinery’s progress as it eagerly awaits further crudes anticipated before the year concludes.

“We are expecting more crudes before the year-end to ensure a smooth initiation of operations,” stated Mr. Akin Omole, Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, at the refinery’s quay in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The refinery, designed for 100% Nigerian crude while maintaining the flexibility to process various other crudes, has already received one million barrels of Agbami crude grade from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO).

This delivery and the earlier consignment constitute the second phase of the anticipated six million barrels of crude scheduled for the refinery’s inauguration.

Upon the successful reception of the complete six million barrels, the refinery is poised to embark on its initial run and commence the production of crucial products such as diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG.

Eventually, it aims to progress towards producing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), offering a potential solution to Nigeria’s and neighboring West African countries’ fuel supply challenges.

“The refinery’s capacity of 650,000 barrels per day positions it to meet and even exceed Nigeria’s demand for refined products, ensuring a surplus for export,” highlighted industry experts.

Moreover, the refinery’s compliance with global standards, including Euro V specifications and emission norms set by various regulatory bodies, emphasizes its commitment to sustainable and top-tier production practices.

Notably, the commencement of operations at the refinery is eagerly awaited within Nigeria and across West Africa, with Mr. Osagie Okunbor, Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria, expressing Shell’s enthusiasm for enabling this development.

As the refinery gears up for full-scale operations, the nation anticipates a momentous event when the first batch of products rolls out into the Nigerian market, marking a shift in the regional energy landscape.
