Emefiele Settles For Plea Bargain In N6.9bn Procurement Fraud Case

The Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, has adjourned to January 18 and 19 for a continuation of the trial of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over an alleged procurement fraud.

Emefiele, who is standing trial on a six-count amended charge on alleged fraudulent procurement of vehicles to the tune of N1.6 billion, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was charged with abusing his position to provide CBN employee Sa’adatu Yaro a corrupt benefit by issuing a contract for the purchase of 43 cars valued at N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.

The ex-CBN boss was granted bail on 17 November 2023 to the tune of N300 million and two sureties and remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending when he meets his bail conditions.

Emefiele, who was brought to court today at the resumed hearing is yet to meet his bail conditions and was taken away by armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
