5 Major Differences In 'Squid Game: The Challenge' Explained

Netflix’s latest venture, Squid Game: The Challenge, mirrors its predecessor in many ways, featuring 456 players competing for a staggering cash prize of $4.56 million.

While the synopsis promises familiar games inspired by the original show and unexpected new additions, there are several noteworthy changes to ensure a fair competition. Let’s delve into these differences. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)

No Fatal Consequences:

In stark contrast to Squid Game’s life-and-death stakes, Squid Game: The Challenge opts for a less dangerous route. Eliminated contestants are sent home with only bruised egos, with no lethal consequences. The absence of weapons doesn’t diminish the eerie presence of masked staff in pink suits.

Overcoming the Dalgona Issue:

Acknowledging that contestants have already seen Squid Game, the creators address the Dalgona cookie game’s predictability. In Squid Game: The Challenge, participants split into groups in a blank room, choosing shapes for their teams. They must agree on assignments within two minutes, avoiding the fatal consequences seen in the original.

Tug of War Replaced by Warships:

Departing from the Tug of War concept, Squid Game: The Challenge introduces Warships, a human-sized version of Battleships. Concerns about replicating tactics from the original lead to this unexpected twist, creating new dynamics among players.

Evolving Voting Process:

In Squid Game, players vote on continuing the games, a decision with life-or-death implications. In Squid Game: The Challenge, while literal murder is off the table, contestants hold a vote to decide who to eliminate. The three players with the most votes face elimination, adding a strategic layer to the competition.

Additional Tests for Added Drama:

The Challenge inserts additional tests between games. These tests, involving one, two, or all players, include challenges like the voting process, elevating the stakes and enhancing the overall entertainment value.

Stay tuned for further updates as new batches of episodes arrive on Netflix.
