Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State Monday inaugurated 17 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit buses in Abeokuta, making Ogun the first state in Nigeria to use CNG vehicles for mass transit.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor declared that the initiative would revolutionize the nation’s entire transport sector and alleviate the hardships caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Abiodun disclosed that the project is a successful public-private partnership with Spiro, a company that had previously implemented CNG schemes in other parts of the West Africa sub-region.

He said, “We have come tops again as the first state in the country to record this feat.”

The move is expected to reduce the cost of transportation within the state and combat climate change. Governor Abiodun also pointed out that the introduction of CNG mass transit buses would create training and job opportunities for thousands of technicians and mechanics across the state.

Prime Business Africa reports that the Governor outlined how the buses would be deployed to assist students on campuses and transport civil servants. They will operate on various routes, including Mowe-Ibafo-Berger, Kuto to Wole Soyinka train station, Onikolobo to Idi-Aba, and Ita-Oshin-Adatan.

Governor Abiodun’s vision extends beyond Abeokuta, as he plans to expand the fleet to provide mass transportation for residents in Sango-Ota, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode. “We will also deploy buses to major towns and cities,” he stated, assuring that citizens, particularly young students, will benefit from this eco-friendly and cost-effective mode of transportation.
