MTV Europe Music Awards Postponed Due To Ongoing Israel-Palestine Crisis

The highly anticipated 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) have been postponed in response to the escalating Israel-Palestine conflict.

The awards show, a global celebration of music, was slated to be held in Paris on November 5, 2023, and was set to feature the inaugural Afrobeats category.

The official announcement was made by the EMAs on October 19, 2023, through a press release that conveyed the decision to protect the safety and well-being of the numerous individuals involved in the event, including employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners from around the world who were set to contribute to its success.

Citing the uncertain and volatile global situation, the statement explained, “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.”

The organizers expressed their sympathy for the ongoing crisis, emphasizing the need for solidarity in such tumultuous times. “The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music.

As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024.”

This year’s EMAs had generated heightened excitement due to the introduction of the Afrobeats category, with top Nigerian artists like Asake, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema nominated, alongside Malian-born French singer Aya Nakamura. The cancellation has undoubtedly disappointed fans and artists alike.
