WSL Wrap: Arsenal, Everton Beat Aston Villa, Liverpool

Arsenal Women scored twice in stoppage time as England forward Beth Mead, playing her first game for 11 months after a serious knee injury, helped the Gunners grab a dramatic win over Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League Action on Sunday evening.

Mead came on in the 88th minute and instantly set up the winning goal, scored by her Lionesses team-mate and former Manchester United forward Alessia Russo to spark scenes of celebration for the majority of a crowd of more than 35,000 at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had been heading for their second successive home loss before midfielder Katie McCabe let fly a rasping shot into the roof of the net in the 92nd minute to set up the incredible finish.

Villa had taken a first-half lead against the run of play when Maz Pacheco was left unmarked and powered in a header from Lucy Staniforth’s superb corner in the 25th minute.

However, in a frantic finale that also saw Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius hit the post and have a shot cleared off the line, Villa could not hold on for what would have been their first win of the season.

In the next WSL game that followed up, Everton earned a well-deserved victory over Liverpool in the Merseyside derby to pick up their first Women’s Super League points of the season and maintain their dominance at Anfield.

Liverpool had a goal in the first half ruled out for offside after the referee reversed his decision for an offside enroute the ‘goal’ by Missy Bo Kearns.

Blues captain Megan Finnigan scored from a header in the opening half as the hosts, who had won their opening two matches, conceded for the first time in the league this season.

Liverpool have now lost on all three occasions they have played against Everton at the Anfield in the WSL.
