Final Venue For Centenary World Cup Divides Spain, Morocco

October 8, 2023
FIFA) announced on Wednesday that the 2030 World Cup will be held across six countries in three continents as the world football governing body celebrates the centenary of the tournament.

The potential venue for the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup has become a dilemma following the announcement by FIFA of the host countries for the tournament scheduled to hold in Spain, Morocco and Portugal with a few games scheduled for Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

Spain and Morocco make up parts of the Iberian isle and have short distance journeys between both nations.

Portugal like Morocco has never hosted the World Cup – same as Paraguay – but the headquarters of the CONMEBOL (South America Confederation) is situated in Paraguay.

Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930 which is why they have been designated to host the opening game. All hosting countries have automatically qualified for the World Cup.

However, there is already friction as regards the country to host the World Cup final in seven years time.

Spain’s Sports Minister Miquel Iceta on Onda Cero radio said that although “you can’t count your chickens before they hatch”, he expected the final to be held in Spain.

But Fouzi Lekjaa, head of Morocco’s football federation, said that the goal was for the final to be in Casablanca.

He hoped to see the country’s efforts “crowned – God willing – with celebrations in Casablanca stadium at a historic final,” he said on Radio Mars.
