The report showcases these states’ exceptional commitment to fiscal transparency and accountability.

According to the report, “Jigawa State’s MTEF document was comprehensive and timely, coupled with a citizens’ budget.” This assessment underscores the state’s dedication to providing accessible financial information. Jigawa’s website and e-procurement portal were highlighted as user-friendly sources of essential data.

Ondo State, securing the second spot, also earned praise for its fully comprehensive and timely-published MTEF document. Although their approved budget’s timeliness was commendable, the citizens’ budget showed a reversal in timing. Nevertheless, Ondo’s e-procurement portal was noted for its navigability, comprehensiveness, and accessibility, mirroring the state’s commitment to transparency.

The States Fiscal Transparency Assessment, an initiative aimed at sustaining the gains of the World Bank’s State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) Programme, has set a new standard for fiscal transparency and accountability among Nigerian states.

This quarterly assessment evaluates states based on criteria such as proposed budgets, approved budgets, citizens’ budgets, budget implementation reports, audited reports, citizens’ accountability reports, eProcurement portals, contract award information, medium-term expenditure frameworks, citizen engagement, and compliance with the Freedom of Information Act.

As Nigeria continues to prioritize fiscal transparency and accountability, Jigawa and Ondo states have emerged as beacons of progress, setting formidable example for other states to emulate.
