Emmanuel OchayiIt has been uncovered that over 7.1 million unmetered electricity consumers were overbilled by power distribution companies (Discos) in Nigeria between January and September 2023.
The figures, totaling N105 billion, shed light on the extent of overbilling rampant in the nation’s power sector.
Speaking on the issue, a representative from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) stated, “The billing of unmetered customers by the power firms has revealed non-compliance with the monthly energy caps issued by the commission.”

The analysis further revealed alarming statistics, with some Discos overbilling hundreds of thousands of customers, leading to billions in revenue for the companies. “We overbilled about 42,902 customers to the tune of N541.9 million,” remarked a spokesperson for Yola Disco.
In response to this egregious violation, NERC has taken decisive action, announcing sanctions against the offending Discos. “We shall deduct a sum of N10,505,286,072 from the annual allowed revenues of the 11 Discos during the next tariff review,” emphasized the regulatory body.
The fallout from these revelations has sparked public outrage, with electricity consumers nationwide voicing their grievances against excessive estimated billing. “We cannot continue to endure this exploitation by the power companies,” remarked a frustrated consumer. “NERC must ensure strict enforcement of regulations to protect consumers.”
Despite the challenges, NERC remains resolute in its commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer protection within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to safeguard consumers’ interests,” assured a NERC official.
