6-year-old Boy Shoots, Injures Class Teacher In US

The city of Newport News in the state of Virginia, United States was thrown into shock on Friday as a six-year-old boy shot his class teacher and injured her.

The incident which happened at Richneck Elementary School at Newport News in the state of Virginia, was according the police “not an accidental shooting.”

The head of Police in New Port, Steve Drew said that the incident resulted from “altercation” between the student and the teacher.

“The altercation was between a six-year-old, the student, who did have the firearm, and the teacher, and then a round was fired,” Drew said.

The teacher who is a woman in her thirties sustained grave injuries but is in stable conditions.

“Her injuries are still considered life-threatening, but there was some improvement in the last update that we got,” said police head, Steve Drew.

This is not the first case of school shooting in New Port News. In 2021, a boy fired several shots into a hall way at Heritage High School, injuring two students.

He was sentenced to ten years for his crime.

According to reports, no student or other staff was injured. Students and staff were taken to safety the Police officials said.

Police officials and the school authority are looking into what happened before the shooting and how the six-year-old got his hands on a handgun.

“Right now it’s still raw, but what I will tell you is there’s going to be a full after-action (report), not only internally from the city council with the school board and others, but we are going to ensure that we have the right steps and policies so that this doesn’t happen again,” Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said.

School children are always at risk of gun violence.

Official records show The U.S. has had 2,032 school shootings since 1970 and these numbers are increasing. Alarmingly, 948 school shootings have taken place since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

According to Statista, As of June 2022, there were 153 school shootings in the United States.
