The world number 1 was leading 6-0 6-0 1-0 at the Rod Laver Arena on Day 8 of the Grand Slam, the first of the year for elite professional tennis superstars.

The French star Mannarino put up a fight and got just a point eventually and avoided becoming the sixth player in history to suffer a dreaded ‘triple bagel’.

The 10-time champion in Melbourne will face American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals, which will be the 58th grand slam quarterfinals and his 14th in Melbourne.

Fritz caused an upset also on Sunday when he beat 2023 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas in a close four sets 7-6(3) 5-7 6-3 6-3, his first win over a top 10 player at a major.

Meanwhile Alex de Minaur was at the cusp of becoming the first Aussie man into the Melbouhee quarterfinals since Nick Kyrgios in 2015, but he was not able to get past Andrey Rublev on Sunday night.

The world number 5, Rublev, came from two sets down to survive the onslaught posed by Alex de Minaur in four hours and 14 minutes.
