President Tinubu has approved a 50% discount on road transport nationwide from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dele Alake, emphasizing the government’s commitment to alleviating the burdens faced by citizens during the festive season.

“In the spirit of Christmas and demonstration of his love for Nigerians, the President feels the federal government should intervene to bring down the costs of public transportation to allow persons who want to travel to visit their loved ones,” said Alake during the briefing held at the state house.

Alake further clarified the initiative’s scope, stating, “Beginning from tomorrow, a special discounted holiday season fare on road transport and zero-fare by rail across Nigeria will be implemented. What this means is that Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via minibuses, luxury buses at a 50% discount of current cost and all our train services on the routes the trains currently serve at zero cost to and fro on their travels this holiday season.”

He outlined the operational period of the initiative, adding, “This special presidential intervention will commence tomorrow, Thursday, December 21, and will end on January 4, 2024.”

The Minister assured that the Federal Government, in collaboration with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, will ensure the seamless execution of this special holiday initiative.

“From tomorrow, Nigerians wishing to embark on inter-state travel to any part of the country from major hubs will be able to do so at half the cost,” he stated.

This move is set to significantly ease travel expenses for citizens intending to reunite with their families and loved ones during the festive period, aligning with President Tinubu’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.
