WHO Reaffirms Mpox As Global Health Emergency Amid Rising Cases
WHO DG, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reaffirmed that Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to the continued surge in global cases.

Following a recent meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee, the WHO Director-General accepted the Committee’s recommendation to extend the PHEIC declaration. The decision was prompted by sustained transmission of the virus, especially in West Africa, and concerns over undetected spread in regions beyond the continent.

Since then, the Emergency Committee has convened three times, each session confirming that the outbreak remains a significant global health threat.

In response, the WHO has issued updated temporary recommendations for countries facing mpox outbreaks. These include strengthened surveillance, improved case detection, and heightened public health awareness efforts to limit the virus’s transmission.

As the virus continues to cross borders, global cooperation and a proactive response remain crucial. The WHO emphasized that early detection, timely reporting, and coordinated action are essential to curbing the spread and safeguarding international public health.
