Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Fubara said what his government did was to salvage the local government council in the state.

“We must salvage the local government council. What we did, with the support of the of Rivers people, was to salvage the local government council,” the governor stated.

He explained that his quest was to comply with the ruling of the Supreme Court on full autonomy for local government areas, which demands having democratically elected officials to take charge of local government council administration.

He urged the newly elected chairmen and other officials to take their work seriously and see it as a call to service.

Fubara urged them to be peace loving and carry the people along in all they are going to do, adding that they should follow his peaceful approach to leadership.

The governor said he has been informed that some opposition elements are mobilising people to go and confront the newly elected officials at local government headquarters on Monday and urged them to remain calm and peaceful.

He assured that his government will continue to be peaceful and maintain law and order.

Prime Business Africa reports that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), declared the winners of the Saturday, 5th October 2024 local government elections, with 22 of 23 LGAs won by the Action Peoples Party (APP).

The RSIEC Chief Election Officer, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who announced the result in Port Harcourt, the state capital, stated that the declaration of results for Etche Local Government Area has been put on hold because the collation of result was ongoing.

Enebeli hailed the residents for their patriotism in coming out to vote on Saturday.

The declaration of the results was observed by members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), chairmen of the state’s independent electoral bodies across the country, and members of the Nigerian Bar Association who acted as observers.
