Venezuela Condemns Trump’s Threat, Pledges to Defend Sovereignty

December 17, 2025

The government of Venezuela has condemned what it described as a “reckless and serious threat” issued by U.S. President Trump, accusing him of violating international law, free trade, and freedom of navigation, Prime Business Africa reports.

In an official statement released on the night of December 16, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela said President Trump, through social media, claimed Venezuela’s oil, land, and mineral wealth as his own and demanded that the country immediately surrender these resources.

The statement also accused the U.S. President of planning an alleged naval blockade to seize Venezuela’s natural resources.

“Venezuela, in the full exercise of the international law that protects us, our Constitution, and the laws of the Republic, reaffirms its sovereignty over all its natural resources, as well as the right to free navigation and free trade in the Caribbean Sea and the world’s oceans,” the statement read.

Venezuela further said it would promptly engage the United Nations to formally denounce what it termed a “serious violation of international law” and called on the people of the United States and the world to reject the U.S. President’s actions.

The statement specifically highlighted a remark attributed to President Trump: “until all the oil, land, and other assets that were previously stolen from us are returned to the United States.” Venezuela described this as an interventionist and colonialist declaration aimed at appropriating the country’s resources.

“The people of Venezuela, in perfect popular, military, and police unity, will know how to defend their historic rights and prevail along the path of peace,” the government said. It reaffirmed that Venezuela would “never again be a colony of an empire or any foreign power” and would continue to protect its independence, sovereignty, and resources.

The Venezuelan statement concluded with a historical reference, invoking the nation’s Liberator, Simón Bolívar: “Fortunately, it has been seen that a handful of free men can defeat powerful empires.”

This latest exchange intensifies already heightened tensions between Caracas and Washington, reflecting deep disputes over control of Venezuela’s extensive natural resources. Prime Business Africa will continue monitoring developments.
